Energy industry

The energy industry is undergoing significant change – from deregulation in existing markets to expansion into new energy sources and regions to the rapid increase of energy costs. As the industry evolves, there is an increasing role for the use of MEMS technologies. MEMS can facilitate the development of new disruptive technologies to capture new markets while enhancing the efficiencies of current markets.

MEMS have a wide-ranging impact on energy applications. MEMS can be used as the basis of:

New energy sources such as fuel cell battery systems

Make existing industrial components more energy efficient

Enhance the ability of oil and gas companies to discover and recover energy deposits

Process control systems for energy conservation systems in building and industrial facilities.

The oil and gas industry is examining new methods to image, monitor and test the conditions directly at remote oilfield sites. MEMS offers a promising solution for this segment due to the need for highly sensitive sensors that have a small form factor and are robust. One example application is the seismic imaging of reservoirs, which can be done with a MEMS device. Using MEMS offers performance improvements in addition to substantial cost and time savings for a wide variety of oil and gas technology providers.
